Update…
I know I just uploaded the article, but there is already more news about the worm.
Apparently the only change has been part of Conficker’s communication method, however it is nothing like Skynet from Terminator, as was spread in the international media.
Apparently some security solution vendors had predicted that the April 1st activation was more hype than action. However, the worm remains installed on a good number of PCs (between 3 and 4 million according to the latest estimates).
This network of zombie machines or botnet has not yet found its purpose in life. Most likely it will be used to send spam or carry out Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. Its P2P communication capabilities allow infected PCs to communicate without needing a central server, distributing updates. So far the most severe impacts have been from the worm’s own efforts to spread through brute force attacks against user credentials. Nevertheless, it is considered that this dormant botnet could awaken at a future date.
F-Secure has more information about the worm here: http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00001636.html
